Residents Protest Poor Road Conditions in Kanpur
Residents of Kanpur have staged a protest against the deteriorating condition of rain-damaged roads. They symbolically renamed 80 Feet Road in Barra as ‘Yamlok Dwar’ to draw attention to the numerous waterlogged potholes. A young man dressed as Yamraj, the Hindu god of death, cut a ribbon to emphasize the severity of the situation.
Protesters displayed a banner reading ‘Yamraj ka Dwar-Grand Opening (road to hell grand inauguration)’, highlighting the hundreds of large potholes that plague the road. Locals criticized the Nagar Nigam, the municipal corporation, for its negligence in maintaining the road, which they claim has become hazardous for motorists.
Traveling on this road has become increasingly dangerous, as rainwater masks the depth of the potholes. Residents are urging the Nagar Nigam to expedite repairs, with protests occurring almost daily due to the overall poor state of roads in the city.
The protests regarding potholes originated from Sariya VIP Road in Jajmau, where a pothole approximately 18 ft deep had developed. On August 27, the Cantt MLA visited the site and, in protest of the absence of officials, descended into the pothole himself. The MLA remained in the pothole for around 4 hours and 30 minutes.
The Bharatiya Udyog Vyapar Mandal stated that their business was suffering due to the dilapidated roads and potholes. They expressed that residents of the city are distressed due to waterlogging and potholes. He remarked that when the road conditions are so dire, the responsible officials should come to the location and assess the situation. After the officials arrived, the MLA exited the pothole. Download the TOI App.
