Rajiv’s maternal cousin Ranjit alleged that Rajiv’s wife, Anjali Nishad, her parents Asha and Raju, and brothers Ram and Shyam reached his house around 1am and assaulted him.
KANPUR: Rajiv Nishad (30) died under suspicious circumstances in Parmiyapurwa, under Kanpur’s Nawabganj police station limits, early on Friday, with his family accusing his wife and in-laws of assaulting him. Rajiv had called Dial 112 around 1am to inform the police about the incident, according to the family.
Family members said Rajiv was taken to Lala Lajpat Rai (LLR) Hospital around 3am, where doctors declared him dead. Police sent the body for a postmortem, which they said would help establish the cause of death. Nawabganj station in-charge Rajkesar Yadav said the family had accused Rajiv’s in-laws of murder. He said police would investigate and take necessary action after receiving a complaint.
Nawabganj police subsequently reached the spot. The cause of death would be determined through the postmortem report and investigation.
The allegations have not been independently confirmed.
The family alleged that the accused chased and beat Rajiv, who escaped to another house where his parents were staying and told them about the assault. They also accused his in-laws of taking cash and jewellery from the house.
Ranjit alleged that Anjali was in a relationship with a youth from Pachor village and that the couple often argued over the issue. She again left for her parental home about a week ago following another dispute.
Anjali had earlier returned to her parental home following a dispute, after which the couple reached a compromise at Nawabganj police station. Ranjit said Anjali and her brother had argued over the phone on Thursday.
