Agra: A 32-year-old Mumbai woman was allegedly attacked by a beggar on the Govardhan parikrama route near Radhakund in Mathura on Monday evening after she refused to give him money, with the man allegedly pushing her into bushes, trying to strangle her, biting part of her nose and fleeing with her nose ring. Police registered a case and began scanning CCTV footage from the area to identify and trace the attacker.
Police said Monika Raina, originally from Sector 15, Kopar Khairane in Navi Mumbai, had been staying in Govardhan for the past six months and regularly undertook the religious circumambulation. Police registered a case under BNS Section 74 (assault or use of criminal force against a woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and Section 131 (assault or use of criminal force without grave and sudden provocation).
In her complaint, she said the man approached her around 5pm and demanded money, became abusive after she refused and continued following her along the route. Investigators are examining available footage and other evidence to establish the attacker’s identity and reconstruct the sequence of events.
