They cleared around six kilometres of the route before returning to Gangotri On Friday, the trekking agency sent porters and guides to locate the stranded group.
Rescue teams deployed by the district administration were forced to turn back due to adverse weather, while authorities planned a helicopter evacuation for Sunday, subject to weather conditions.
The district disaster management centre said authorities had conducted an aerial reconnaissance of the affected area by helicopter. One of them reportedly sustained a head injury. The stranded group had requested evacuation by air, following which the disaster management department formally sought a helicopter from the authorities. However, deteriorating weather forced the ground rescue teams to return, leaving the eight stranded overnight. If flying conditions remained unsuitable, ground teams would resume efforts to reach the stranded group. Uttarkashi : Eight people, including trekkers from Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, remained stranded beyond Bhojkhadak on the Kedartal trekking route in Uttarkashi district on Saturday after an avalanche blocked their return. Uttarkashi district magistrate Prashant Arya said the administration had requested a helicopter from govt and would attempt an aerial rescue on Sunday if weather permitted.
A group of 13 people, comprising seven trekkers and six support staff, had left Gangotri for Kedartal on Tuesday. However, bad weather and difficult terrain delayed their return. One cook returned to Gangotri earlier, while the remaining members were expected back on Thursday.
