The alternative is to acquire the land by providing compensation,” the DM said. “Civil works at the river’s origin will begin soon after the executing agency is finalised through the tendering process,” the DM said. “We are trying to resolve the issue amicably by appealing to farmers to voluntarily donate land for the river channel. A key component of the project is the ecological revival of three historical lakes at Gomti’s origin. The project also includes structural stabilisation using plain cement concrete (PCC) and reinforced cement concrete (RCC) lining, besides construction of targeted pipelines. Download the TOI App.

Gomti originates at Phulhar Lake in Madhotanda village of Pilibhit and flows for nearly 960 km through several districts of UP before joining Ganga in Ghazipur district. In Pilibhit, the river passes through 16 gram panchayats over a stretch of 47.2 km before entering neighbouring Shahjahanpur district. As a result, farmers who legally hold the land cultivate parts of the river channel, narrowing its width and obstructing its flow.

The entire river course was “erroneously” recorded in farmers’ names during a revision of revenue records in 1952, according to the district administration. However, the river’s flow has been affected by the way its land was recorded in revenue records.

Pilibhit: The district administration has stepped up preparations to implement a Rs 12.26-crore comprehensive rejuvenation project for Gomti river following approval from central govt. The project, sanctioned under the Namami Gange Mission-3 on Sept 17 will be fully funded by the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) under central sector assistance. The proposed interventions include an interceptor drain, a local sewer network, a 1.09-MLD main pumping station and a 1-MLD nature-based sewage treatment plant using horizontal-flow constructed wetland technology.

District magistrate Alok Kumar has directed the departments concerned to expedite the formalities so that the tender process to select an executing agency can begin as early as next week. The sanctioned amount will cover civil works as well as five years of operation and maintenance. To prevent pollution at source, the project will address domestic wastewater generated in Madhotanda village.
