Haridwar: Shyampur Flyover on the Haridwar–Bijnor Highway has become a major accident hotspot over the past two months, claiming 13 lives and leaving 22 people injured. All the accidents occurred on the 1.5km stretch of the flyover where construction work is underway. Three children and two women were among the victims, and 11 out of 13 were aged between six and 36 years, according to data.
Shyampur SHO Nitesh Sharma told TOI, “We have reported 13 deaths in road accidents that took place on the Shyampur flyover, while 22 people sustained injuries.Another accident took place on the same flyover after two cars collided, leaving three persons critically injured on Thursday. Locals blamed the absence of a central divider, warning signboards, reflective markers, and proper traffic safety arrangements for the repeated mishaps, and demanded immediate installation of safety infrastructure.. We have written several letters to the NHAI.”
