Cages set up to catch leopards have become a place to play for children
The forest department estimates that more than 500 leopards live in Bijnor. The big cats have killed more than 38 people in the district since January 2023, according to the department. It has placed more than 120 traps at sites where leopard activity has been reported, and more than five leopards have been caught in the past week, officials said.

A video, viral on social media, recorded by villagers shows children, including teenagers, entering one of the traps in Rampur village in Najibabad, while adults nearby watch and record the scene on their phones. In a separate incident, chicken and goats used as bait were stolen from some cages. Forest officials suspect villagers took the animals. Leopard Traps Installed in Bijnor to Address Human-Wildlife Conflict
Bijnor divisional forest officer Jay Singh Kushwah confirmed that traps have been set up near agricultural fields and populated areas following multiple leopard sightings and attacks in the district. Kushwah emphasized the importance of informing local villagers about the dangers of interfering with these traps.
He warned that leopards could be attracted to the traps if bait is used, posing a risk of injury or death if the trap door closes unexpectedly on anyone inside.
