This year’s theme, “The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives,” highlights the need to transform healthcare and social systems to respond to increasing longevity and the changing needs of older persons. Singh said that the theme is particularly relevant in the present era, when people are living longer but often with multiple chronic diseases, frailty, disability and functional limitations. An awareness programme was organised in the OPD under the leadership of Prof. Anup Singh, Nodal Officer, National Centre of Ageing, with the active participation of students and staff of the National Programme for Health Care of the Elderly (NPHCE) and Department of Geriatric Medicine. The programme focused on healthy ageing, prevention of disease, functional independence and the importance of maintaining dignity and quality of life in later years. Comprehensive health assessment and treatment were provided, along with screening for blood sugar and blood pressure and physiotherapy services. Speaking about the relevance of this year’s theme, Dr. The focus needs to shift from simply adding years to life towards adding health, independence and quality to those years.
