The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Lucknow: Ahead of the festival season, the Department of Food Safety has launched the ‘Shuddh Hi Shubh Hai’ campaign, aiming to make safe food consumption a regular practice rather than one limited to the festival season.

A govt spokesperson said the emphasis would now also be on the food service sector, along with food manufacturing units. Amid rising demand for food, a watch will also be kept on the use of substandard ingredients and unnecessary artificial additives,” said an official. He said that as part of the campaign, food business operators would be given information on standards of cleanliness, safe storage, food-grade packaging and temperature control.

The department has already started inspections of food courts and fast-food establishments in Noida, Lucknow and Gorakhpur . “Under the campaign, luxury hotels, large restaurants, bakeries, sweet shops, dhabas, industrial canteens, outdoor caterers, food courts and small street food vendors are being inspected. The department will emphasise keeping raw and cooked food, as well as vegetarian and non-vegetarian food items, separate, along with the use of clean water and maintaining kitchen cleanliness. Smaller businesses will be advised to avoid packing food items in newspaper, book or magazine paper.
