Unlike conventional surgery, which often requires larger incisions: The wider industry impact

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Lucknow: Robotic surgery is emerging as a promising option for treating complex paediatric disorders, particularly congenital anomalies, urinary tract obstructions, kidney diseases and gastrointestinal conditions, experts said at the 14th conference of the Society of Paediatric Urology at KGMU on Friday.

KGMU’s paediatric surgery department head, JD Rawat, said robotic systems equipped with high-definition 3D cameras and fine instruments allow surgeons to operate with greater precision, a crucial advantage when treating children with delicate organs, nerves and blood vessels. He said robot-assisted procedures are proving particularly effective in urinary and kidney-related disorders. Clarifying that robots do not perform surgeries independently, SN Kuril said surgeons remain in complete control throughout the procedure. Experts said the technology can offer several benefits, including smaller scars, quicker healing, shorter hospital stays and faster return to normal activities, making it an increasingly valuable tool in managing complex paediatric conditions.

Unlike conventional surgery, which often requires larger incisions, robotic surgery is performed through small keyhole openings, reducing post-operative pain, blood loss and infection risk while speeding up recovery. He added that robotic surgery is not suitable for every child and is recommended based on factors such as age, weight, disease severity and equipment availability.
