Meerut: Two brothers from UP‘s Bulandshahr were sentenced to life imprisonment on Tuesday for murdering their 27-year-old sister following a dispute over her wedding jewellery, which her maternal family had kept and refused to return. A local court also imposed a fine of Rs 55,000 each on the convicts. The brothers allegedly hanged her body from a tree to make the murder look like suicide and later tried to implicate three men from a rival faction.
Veerwati went missing on Aug 22, 2021, after stepping out with her mother from her parental home in Parihawali village, where she was staying for Raksha Bandhan , the court heard.
Govt counsel Pravendra Singh Lodhi said the brothers had hanged Veerwati’s body to make the murder look like suicide. They later tried to pass off the case as “robbery and murder” after police questioned injury marks on her body and found that her jewellery was missing. “They also tried to implicate three men from a rival local faction with whom they had a dispute,” he said.
Her body was found hanging from a tree in a nearby mango orchard the next morning. Additional district judge Rajesh Kumar convicted the brothers after examining evidence from eight prosecution witnesses. The case was heard under ‘Operation Conviction’, a state police initiative to speed up trials involving violent crimes and offences against women and children.
