Rai claimed that “no riot had occurred in Bareilly” and alleged that Hindus and Muslims had jointly tried to defuse tensions, but police lathi-charged residents and registered cases against them on the state govt’s directions. “Bareilly’s Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb could not be broken,” Rai said.
Rai, who was travelling from Delhi to Shahjahanpur, diverted his convoy to the area, prompting police and intelligence officials to reach the spot. He met Raza’s son Farman Raza, inquired about his father’s condition in jail and assured the family of legal support.
