Kolkata: An FIR was registered at the Bidhannagar South Police Station, initiating a criminal investigation into allegations of forged medical credentials, impersonation, illegal clinical practice and suspected collusion within some West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC) officials.
The case was registered on Sept 15, following a complaint lodged under Section 173 of BNSS, 2023, by four doctors, one of them Rajib Kumar Pandey from Kanchrapara. But formal written correspondence from the Bihar Medical Council confirmed the submitted credentials were fraudulent and were not issued by them. The complaint names a doctor, who allegedly operates healthcare facilities in Barasat. The FIR names another doctor, who reportedly practise as a general surgeon in nursing homes in East Burdwan. The complaint claims both obtained registration certificates from WBMC, located at Salt Lake Sector III, by submitting MBBS and PG qualifications purportedly issued by Bihar Medical Council. It has been alleged that despite the bogus foundational documents, WBMC issued valid registrations, allowing the accused to illegally treat patients, perform surgical procedures, and claim financial reimbursements through state-sponsored health schemes such as Swasthya Sathi. The complainants have also demanded a detailed probe into the potential complicity, oversight, or deliberate concealment by multiple WBMC office-bearers, including EC members, and scrutiny officials who approved or maintained the registrations.
