On September 9, a significant security breach occurred at the Document Verification and Physical Standard Test (DVPAST) centre located within the Meerut Police Line. A computer containing sensitive data was stolen without any visible damage to the locks on the premises. This incident raises concerns about data security protocols in place at the facility and the potential implications for personal information safety.
The computer had important data but the nature of the data was not revealed though it hints towards the ongoing UP home guard recruitment physical tests and education documents of the candidates, according to sources.
In the FIR, Kamal Saini said, “When I arrived at the centre on the morning of Sept 9, I found the lock untouched but the computer and its system gone.” Besides, the two hard disks of the facility’s DVR unit were also found missing, apparently taken in a separate incident after the computer theft. An FIR was filed at the cyber cell instead of the Civil Lines police station on the same day. The centre’s upkeep was the responsibility of clerk Kamal Saini, while head constable Satyendra Kumar was on duty when the theft took place.
The FIR was filed under BNS section 305 (deals with aggravated theft in specific sensitive locations, modes of transport, or public and religious properties.) and Sec 66 of the IT Act (digital fraud).
