Congress names candidates for Nandigram, Rejinagar assembly bypolls

The Congress party has announced its candidates for upcoming West Bengal bypolls.

KOLKATA: The Congress on Friday announced Mohd Abdullahil Kafi as its candidate for the Rejinagar assembly constituency and Milan Pradhan for the Nandigram seat in the upcoming West Bengal bypolls.

The Election Commission has scheduled polling for both Nandigram and Rejinagar on October 6, with counting of votes set for October 9. The notification for the bypolls was issued on September 9, while the last date for filing nominations is September 16. Scrutiny will take place on September 17 and candidates can withdraw their nominations till September 19.

In the April assembly elections, Adhikari won from both Nandigram and Bhowanipore before choosing to retain the south Kolkata seat and resigning from Nandigram. Kabir, who won from both Rejinagar and Nowda, resigned as Rejinagar MLA. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge approved the candidature of the two candidates, according to an AICC release. The bypolls were necessitated by the resignations of Nandigram MLA Suvendu Adhikari and Rejinagar MLA Humayun Kabir. Download the TOI App.
