When people talk about making a home look luxurious, the conversation usually turns to expensive furniture, marble, designer lighting, or a complete renovation. But you don’t always need to spend lakhs to make a noticeable difference. In my experience, it is often the smaller decisions that change the way a home feels. A room can have beautiful furniture and still feel unfinished, while a fairly simple space can look far more refined when the proportions, lighting, and details are right.

Remove before you buy

Because it costs absolutely nothing, this is probably my favourite piece of advice. Here are five changes worth considering before you start planning a major makeover. Most homes rely heavily on one overhead light, and that can make even a well-designed room feel flat. Try adding a lamp near a reading chair, a floor lamp beside the sofa or softer lighting in a corner that usually goes unnoticed. The idea is not to brighten every inch of the room. In fact, a little contrast between light and shadow can make a space feel warmer and more interesting. Lighting is one of those things people often underestimate until they see the difference it makes. Curtains can quietly change the proportions of an entire room. If possible, place the curtain rod a little higher and let the fabric fall close to the floor. It can make the window appear larger and give the room a greater sense of height. Also, don’t be too stingy with the fabric. Curtains that barely cover the width of a window often look a little flat. A fuller curtain has more softness and movement, which can make the room feel much more finished. You don’t need every piece in a room to be a statement piece. Choose one thing that naturally draws attention. It could be a beautiful artwork, an interesting light fixture, a textured wall, or a piece of furniture with real character. Once you have that focal point, the rest of the room can be quieter. This usually creates a far more balanced space than trying to fill every corner with something decorative. A room can have a simple colour palette and still feel rich. The difference often comes from texture. A woven rug, natural wood, stone, linen, upholstery, and cushions can all bring something different to a space. These layers stop a room from feeling flat without adding unnecessary clutter. The important thing is not to introduce too many competing materials. A few well-chosen textures usually work better than trying to include everything. Before shopping for new decor, remove a few things and see what happens. Clear an overcrowded side table. Take away the accessories that don’t really add anything. Give your furniture a little breathing room. We often assume a room needs more when, sometimes, it simply needs less. A luxurious home is not necessarily one filled with expensive things. It is a home where the details feel considered, and nothing appears to be there by accident. Sometimes, making a space look better isn’t about what you add. It’s about knowing what to leave out.
