Between damp corners, humid air, and water that sits still for longer than anyone realises, bathrooms tick almost every box on a mosquito’s breeding wishlist. The good news is most of these problems are entirely fixable with a bit of regular attention rather than expensive intervention. Here are five simple, genuinely effective tips to keep mosquitoes out of your bathroom for good.
A physical barrier is one of the most straightforward ways to stop mosquitoes from accessing standing water in the first place. Fine mesh screens fitted under or over drain covers block mosquitoes from getting into the trapped water below to lay eggs, while still allowing water to drain through normally. These covers do need occasional cleaning themselves, since debris can build up on the mesh over time and reduce how well they let water pass, but they’re a low-cost, largely maintenance-free fix once properly installed. Some bathroom drains, particularly in less-used spaces, will always hold a little residual water no matter how well you maintain them. For these, pouring a small amount of odourless cooking oil into the drain creates a thin surface film that effectively suffocates any mosquito larvae trying to develop there, cutting off their air supply before they can mature. It’s a cheap, low-effort backup measure for exactly the spots regular cleaning can’t always fully dry out.
