Ever gone to bed exhausted, only to find your mind suddenly wide awake? One old conversation leads to another, tomorrow’s worries creep in, and before you know it, you are mentally solving problems that have not even happened.

Because a thought appears does not mean you have to act on it, but just. Buddha’s teachings offer a gentler way to deal with a restless mind. Instead of trying to silence every thought, the idea is to change how we respond to them. Images: Canva (for representative purposes only) The mind can turn a tiny worry into an entire story. Notice it, question it and let it pass if it does not need your attention. Trying desperately not to feel anxious, sad or worried can sometimes make those feelings stronger. Allow the emotion to be there without immediately judging yourself for having it. Overthinking often pulls you into the past or an imagined future. Bring yourself back to what is actually happening now. Focus on your breath, your surroundings or even something as simple as the cup of tea in your hands. Not every mistake, conversation or disappointment needs to be replayed endlessly. Buddha’s teachings emphasise impermanence.

What feels overwhelming today may not hold the same weight tomorrow.

It is about learning that you do not have to listen to everything it says. A calm mind is not necessarily an empty mind. Thoughts will keep appearing. The real practice is learning not to follow every single one. Sometimes, switching off the mind is not about forcing it to become silent.
