For Mapusa-based Cosmo Lobo, Goa-themed souvenirs have been part of his work since 1996. Prices for such keepsakes range from around ₹80 for stickers, badges and magnets to about ₹5,000 for larger prints and framed artworks.

For local artists and makers, that connection often begins with the details that are easy to overlook. Porvorim-based artist Vaibhav Salgaonkar has turned his illustrations of Goa into coasters, fridge magnets and framed artworks. “I wanted people to not only see these illustrations as artworks, but also be able to take a little piece of Goa home with them. His subjects range from old Goan windows, traditional homes and architectural details to fish thalis, local festivals and traditional art forms such as Kaavi and Chitari. He also draws inspiration from forgotten occupations, streets and distinctly Goan expressions. His work spans digital art, caricatures and watercolours. He creates framed tiles, plates, mugs, keychains, magnets and azulejos featuring Goan places, architecture and everyday scenes. “Whether it is a framed tile, plate, mug, keychain or magnet, I want each piece to capture something distinctly Goan. Pop-up stalls and local fairs also offer visitors an opportunity to meet the artists, hear the stories behind their work and discover pieces that are made locally. Perhaps that is what makes a Goa souvenir more than just something bought at the end of a holiday.
