GUWAHATI: Shubman Gill produced a breathtaking batting masterclass to smash the fastest double century in ODI cricket history as India chased down West Indies’ imposing 406-run target with 39 balls to spare in the second ODI at Barsapara Cricket Stadium here on Wednesday. He had earlier been given a reprieve on 84 when Keacy Carty dropped him at deep mid-wicket. Gill and Rohit’s opening stand of 255 runs fell just three runs short of Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly’s all-time record of 258 runs scored against Kenya in 2001.

The eight-wicket win, second on the trot, also sealed the three-match series in the hosts’ favour. Rohit was dismissed immediately after reaching three figures, trapped lbw by Jayden Seales.

India’s remarkable pursuit followed an extraordinary batting display from Windies, who posted 405/7 — their highest ODI total against India. John Campbell struck 101 off 68 balls (9×4, 5×6), captain Shai Hope made 104 off 94 (8×4, 3×6), while Amir Jangoo top-scored with a 114 off 77 (13×3, 3×6) For the first time in their ODI history, three West Indies batters scored centuries in the same innings.
