It’s set to open before the 2030 WNBA season, timed to coincide with the debut of Philadelphia’s incoming expansion franchise. After more than a decade as tenants, the Sixers are stepping into a 50-50 ownership partnership with Comcast Spectator for the new building. For the Flyers, there’s a symbolism, since the move returns the franchise to the ground where it began play in 1967 and won both of its Stanley Cups.

“This is a new era for Philadelphia sports,” he said (via ESPN), pointing to the site’s history with Ed Snider and the original Spectrum as part of what makes the location meaningful. “Philly fans deserve the best arena in the world, and we are excited to partner with Comcast to deliver just that,” he shared. But the Sixers organization has more going on right now than one blockbuster signing. Across town, the plans for a new home for both the 76ers and the Flyers are finally taking shape, with a timeline that give Philadelphia sports fans plenty to think about heading into the new year. The design leans into that legacy too, with more than half an acre of outdoor space, food and beverage areas, and a grand staircase modeled after the steps outside the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Sixers managing partner Josh Harris shared that Philly fans deserve the best arena in the world and that this privately funded project will host moments fans remember for generations.

Image via: Getty Images LeBron James is reportedly taking a significant pay cut to make the move work, agreeing to a two-year deal worth around $8 million with a player option, a steep drop from the more than $50 million he made last season with the Lakers. At 41, he’s not chasing another big paycheck. He’s chasing a title in a city that hasn’t celebrated one since 1983.
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman also weighed in, calling it a state-of-the-art home worthy of the team and describing the investment as a vote of confidence in Philadelphia’s long-term future.
