A resident of Sangila village has lodged a complaint against personnel at the Hathras Gate police station, accusing them of illegal detention, assault, and coercing a false confession. In response to these allegations, an inquiry has been initiated to investigate the claims further.
Allegations of Police Torture in Custody
Shailendra Kumar, a daily wage worker, has filed a complaint against the police, alleging that he endured five days of torture while in custody. The complaint, submitted on September 7 to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, claims that Kumar was coerced into making a video confession under duress.
During their detention, both Kumar and another individual were reportedly subjected to physical abuse, including beatings and threats of electric shocks. They were also compelled to record further video confessions. Kumar highlighted significant procedural violations, noting that he was neither medically examined nor presented before a magistrate within the required timeframe.
Copies of the complaint were sent to various authorities, including the national and state human rights commissions, the Governor of Uttar Pradesh, the Chief Secretary, and senior police officials on September 8.
In response, the Hathras Police stated that the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) for the city has been instructed to conduct an inquiry and ensure that any legal actions taken are fair and impartial.
The group assaulted him and forcibly administered an intoxicating substance and coerced him into recording a video confessing to his involvement in a theft case alongside another villager, Prakash. The crowd then handed him and Prakash over to Hathras Gate police station for questioning.
