Stephen Curry’s wife Ayesha Curry’s growing business profile came under legal scrutiny in 2020 when celebrity branding company Flutie Entertainment sued her for more than $10 million. Flutie Entertainment filed the lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court in April 2020, claiming its work with Curry had helped build her profile as a food and lifestyle personality. 2014, when she had a much smaller social media and food-blog presence. The company alleged that Curry ended the relationship in May 2019. The company sought at least $10 million in damages. Curry was an actress before she married Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry in 2011. He said Curry had ended her relationship with Robert Flutie in early 2019 and described him as a “disgruntled manager.
The company helped Ayesha secure a Food Network show and a hosting role on ABC’s “Great American Baking Show, according to the lawsuit. “We are confident that the legal process will find his accusations nonsensical and completely unfounded,” Plonsker said at the time. The lawsuit accused Curry of breaching a business agreement after she ended the company’s five-year relationship with her. The case also named six Curry-affiliated companies and a former Flutie employee who later worked directly with Curry. It also pointed to her bestselling cookbook and several food-related businesses as results of the five-year relationship. Flutie claimed it began working with Ayesha in Nov. The company alleged that its work helped turn her food interests into a larger entertainment and business career. It claimed that she later denied Flutie its share of proceeds from businesses and slowed down new projects. Flutie also alleged that Curry hired a former employee of the company who had worked on her account. In the lawsuit, the company claimed Curry had “essentially gutted and devalued Flutie Entertainment’s interests. Two ventures featured heavily in the complaint: Homemade, a planned home meal-kit and kitchen lifestyle business, and Yardie Girl, an entertainment production company. Flutie alleged that it had worked on partnerships, sponsors and the legal and financial structure surrounding Homemade. It also claimed involvement in developing Yardie Girl before Curry ended the relationship. It also asked for a ruling that would protect its claimed stake in Homemade and Yardie Girl. Flutie described itself as “clearly and undeniably instrumental in helping her achieve success. That was the company’s position in the lawsuit and was not a finding by a court. The legal dispute also put the spotlight on how quickly Curry had developed her own public profile. Flutie’s lawsuit, however, presented a different account of that rise. The company claimed Curry had a relatively modest social media and food-blog following when their relationship began and argued that its work played a major role in developing her business success. The lawsuit also claimed that Curry was known largely as Stephen Curry’s wife when Flutie first began working with her. That claim became part of the company’s argument that its involvement helped develop her independent business profile. Curry’s attorney Michael Plonsker rejected the allegations.
By July 2021, the company had dropped the breach-of-contract case, although the broader dispute was still set to continue before a state Labor Commission officer. Flutie Entertainment subsequently filed papers seeking dismissal of the lawsuit. The dismissal did not amount to a court finding that Ayesha Curry had breached the agreement. In June 2021, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge put the civil lawsuit on hold after both sides agreed that proceedings should wait until the Labor Commission addressed Curry’s petition.
In a filing, Plonsker alleged that Flutie had viewed Curry as its “golden goose” and used “every manipulative and deceptive tactic” to seek larger shares of her earnings. “We want to make sure that we rally around everyone and that these kids are not wondering where their next meal is coming from,” Ayesha Curry said about the food effort. Curry’s legal team later challenged the case through the California Labor Commission, arguing that the commission had exclusive jurisdiction over the dispute. Those statements came from Curry’s attorney and were allegations in the legal dispute, not findings by a court. The lawsuit came during a period when Curry and Stephen Curry were also involved in charitable efforts in the San Francisco Bay Area. The couple worked with the Alameda County Community Food Bank during the coronavirus pandemic to help provide one million meals to students affected by school closures. The legal complaint, however, focused on a business disagreement and had no connection to the couple’s charitable work.
