Adam Vinatieri set for bizarre Guinness World Record attempt atop the Swiss Alps
During the Patriots’ 2001 playoff run, he delivered one of the most memorable kicks in franchise history against the Oakland Raiders. With heavy snow falling during the divisional playoff game in January 2002, Vinatieri connected on a 45-yard field goal late in regulation to tie the game. More than two decades later, the 53-year-old former kicker is preparing to kick in snow again, except this time, he will be doing it thousands of feet above sea level. Vinatieri spent 24 NFL seasons with New England and Indianapolis from 1996 through 2019. He remains the NFL’s all-time leading scorer with 2,673 points, according to Guinness World Records. He also holds the NFL record for most career field-goal attempts, with 715, according to the league’s record book. The Patriots are using the event to begin their countdown to their 2026 international game in Munich, where New England will face the Detroit Lions on November 15.
The Pro Football Hall of Famer will travel to the Swiss Alps next week to attempt an official Guinness World Records field goal at Jungfraujoch, known as the “Top of Europe,” at an elevation of 3,454 meters (11,332 feet). If successful, Vinatieri’s kick would establish the highest-elevation field goal ever recorded, according to the Patriots. Adam Vinatieri has already made some of the most iconic kicks in NFL history, but the New England Patriots legend is preparing for perhaps his most unusual challenge yet. The Patriots are partnering with Jungfrau Railways for the event as part of the franchise’s promotion ahead of its upcoming international game in Munich. And the location could not be more fitting for a kicker whose career includes one of the NFL’s most famous snow kicks. He later kicked the game-winning field goal in overtime, helping New England advance toward its first Super Bowl championship. The Guinness World Records attempt isn’t happening in isolation.
