On September 22, Vinatieri travelled to Jungfraujoch in Switzerland, a mountain destination widely known as the “Top of Europe. There, at an altitude of 3,454 metres, or about 11,332 feet above sea level, he successfully converted a 33-yard field goal and earned recognition for the highest-altitude American football field goal. He became famous for delivering some of the most important kicks in New England Patriots history, including his unforgettable field goal against the Oakland Raiders in the 2001 AFC divisional playoff game. “But kicking a field goal at 3,454 meters is something completely different from anything I’ve ever done. Vinatieri spent 10 seasons in New England before playing 14 seasons with the Indianapolis Colts. He finished his NFL career with four Super Bowl victories, three Pro Bowl selections and more than 2,600 points. He retired after the 2019 season as the league’s all-time leader in field goals made, with 599.
Because no one has done this before, you feel the altitude with every breath you take, your heart rate is different, your rhythm is different, and no one can really tell you beforehand how it will affect the kick,.
“Snow is simply part of my time with the Patriots,” said Vinatieri, who converted plenty of kicks in snowy conditions during his career, including in the 2001 season’s AFC Championship Game against the Raiders. The attempt took place on snow-covered ground, with wind adding another layer of difficulty to a kick that already had little in common with a normal NFL field goal. The fact that we were able to set the record under these conditions makes me very proud. In Super Bowl XXXVI, Vinatieri made the game-winning field goal against the St. Louis Rams as time expired. Two years later, he again delivered the deciding kick in Super Bowl XXXVIII, this time against the Carolina Panthers. His snow-covered kick against the Raiders remains another defining image from the early Patriots dynasty.
That kick came through heavy snow and helped New England survive a dramatic postseason contest before the team went on to win its first Super Bowl.
The location was also significant. The Patriots have a strong connection with Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and the franchise has been using the region as part of its international outreach. The Munich game will give the team another chance to connect with European NFL fans. The former kicker split the uprights and walked away with another piece of history. His latest achievement does not change his NFL statistics or add another championship to his résumé. It does something different. It shows that even after retirement, Vinatieri can still find a new challenge that feels worthy of the reputation he built over a remarkable career.
