With sales climbing and distribution reaching all 50 states, the company is taking on established beer giants in a category where winning shelf space is never easy. The American beer market has become a tough place for smaller brands, but Garage Beer is finding room to grow. Backed by NFL stars Jason and Travis Kelce , the light beer brand has expanded beyond its Midwestern roots and built a national presence. Its rise is not just about celebrity ownership. A simple product, sharp marketing and a clear understanding of everyday drinkers have helped Garage Beer stand out.
Garage Beer recorded a remarkable 252% sales increase in 2023, before the Kelce brothers became majority investors in 2024. Its relaunch in early 2023 gave it a fresh identity, with a lighter recipe, new packaging and a focus on just 95 calories per serving. Garage Beer expected to produce around 300,000 barrels in 2025, according to the figures cited by VinePair. Michelob Ultra, meanwhile, held an 8.2% share of the US beer market by volume, illustrating the gap between a rising challenger and an industry heavyweight.
Because it shows the brand had already gained traction before its biggest celebrity boost arrived, that timeline matters.
Garage Beer CEO Andy Sauer explained the thinking behind its approach: “I wanted people who were willing to take risks, people who were willing to do something different,” he says. The beer began as a product from Braxton Brewing Company in Kentucky. Instead of competing for attention among specialist craft beers, Garage Beer targeted drinkers who wanted an easygoing alternative to mainstream lagers. The Kelces then brought their enormous fan bases and marketing appeal into the picture. Jason’s entertaining social media videos, creative promotions and unusual partnerships helped the brand earn attention without relying entirely on traditional advertising. “That’s one of the more monolithic categories in all of grocery. You need people who are comfortable with the idea of very different thinking. That willingness to experiment has helped Garage Beer build a personality beyond its product. It has also given the brand a way to compete against companies with much larger advertising budgets. National distribution marks a major milestone, but sustaining growth could prove harder than securing attention. Garage Beer is entering a market dominated by established names such as Michelob Ultra, Busch Light and Modelo Especial. The scale of that competition is clear. Production has also moved beyond Braxton Brewing Company to include partners such as Founders Brewing Co., allowing Garage Beer to meet growing demand. For now, Garage Beer has shown that a smaller brand can challenge established players with a focused product and memorable marketing. The bigger question is whether it can turn celebrity-driven attention into lasting consumer loyalty. Get the latest Sports News and Live updates. Download the TOI app.
