DHAKA: A 55-year-old Hindu teacher was beaten to death during an arbitration meeting over a land dispute in Bangladesh’s Dinajpur district, police said. In a statement, Bangladesh Hindu Sammilan Sangha — an organisation representing the minority community — Monday condemned the killing, with its general secretary MK Roy saying this was not merely a criminal act but also an attack on rule of law, humanity, and spirit of a non-communal Bangladesh. Manoranjan Roy was killed when he tried to mediate between the parties and calm the situation after tensions escalated during the meeting on Sunday, they said.
Demanding immediate arrest of all those involved and exemplary punishment, the Sangha called for ensuring security of the bereaved family and providing it adequate compensation. It urged govt to take effective measures to prevent land grabbing and persecution of Hindus across country and ensure safety of their lives and property.
