Brittany Mahomes Is building her own women’s soccer legacy with the Kansas City current’s $140 million stadium While Patrick Mahomes rules the NFL.
In 2024, the Current scored 57 regular-season goals and recorded 16 wins. A year later, they won the 2025 NWSL Shield after finishing the regular season with the league’s best record. Located along Kansas City’s riverfront, the venue has a capacity of around 11,500 and was privately funded by the club’s ownership group. It hosted its first match on March 16, 2024, when the Current beat the Portland Thorns 5-4 in front of a sold-out crowd.
The club’s progress has also been visible on the pitch. The award was the first in the club’s history.
How did Brittany Mahomes go from playing soccer to owning a professional team?
After leaving professional soccer, she launched an online fitness training business in 2019, giving her another way to stay connected to sports and help people work towards their fitness goals. Her move into team ownership came in December 2020, when Brittany joined Angie and Chris Long in bringing a new National Women’s Soccer League team to Kansas City. Patrick Mahomes joined the ownership group in 2023, but Brittany had been part of the project from its early days.
Because she was no longer involved in sports only as a player, this was an important step in her career. Patrick Mahomes has spent years making a name for himself in the NFL, winning Super Bowls and becoming one of the most recognised quarterbacks in American football. But while his career with the Kansas City Chiefs often puts the family in the headlines, Brittany Mahomes has been working on something of her own. She is a co-owner of the Kansas City Current, a professional women’s soccer team that is helping bring more attention to women’s sports. Her journey from playing soccer to owning a club shows that her story is about much more than being married to an NFL star. She has her own sporting background, business interests and a role in shaping the future of women’s soccer. Her experience as a player gave her a closer look at the demands of competitive sport and the work athletes put in behind the scenes. She now had a role in building a club, helping it grow and giving women’s soccer a stronger place in the city. For Brittany, the project connects her background as a soccer player with her work as an owner. She knows the sport from the playing side, but she is now also part of a group investing in the places and resources that help professional athletes do their jobs. Their shared involvement in the Kansas City Current also shows how their interests have moved beyond football. Patrick built his career on the NFL field, while Brittany has helped develop a club in a different sport. Together, they are part of a project that connects professional sports, business and the Kansas City community.
