The 2000 NFL Draft came and went, 198 players heard their names before his, and the New England Patriots finally took a chance on a skinny Michigan quarterback in the sixth round. Twenty-six years later, that same quarterback is worth $650 million and owns a piece of an NFL franchise. The $333 million Brady earned over 23 NFL seasons sounds enormous until you consider how much he left on the table.

He won championships instead of chasing pay raises, and for a long time, that was the trade-off. Tom Brady was not supposed to be this. Not even close. What happened in between is one of the most unlikely financial stories in American sports history. For most of his prime years in New England, he was deliberately underpaid relative to market value, restructuring contracts to give the team more salary-cap room.

In May 2022, while Brady was technically still a quarterback, Fox Sports signed him to a 10-year, $375 million broadcast deal to become the network’s lead NFL analyst. That is $37.5 million per year, which works out to more than what any team ever paid him in a single season. It is a 5% ownership stake in the Las Vegas Raiders that he purchased alongside Knighthead Capital co-founder Tom Wagner in October 2024, following a long and complicated approval process by NFL owners. Together, Brady and Wagner bought a combined 10% stake for $220 million, with Brady personally spending around $110 million for his half, plus a share of roughly $24 million in additional league-related fees tied to the franchise’s relocation history. The purchase price implied a team valuation somewhere around $3.5 billion at the time, which was well below what independent estimates suggested the Raiders were actually worth.

What changed everything was what came after football. Tom Brady’s most valuable asset right now is not a Fox paycheck. Brady also owns a minority stake in the WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces and has invested in English soccer club Birmingham City, so his portfolio continues to grow outside American football.
