Brady explained his personal connection to the park in a statement reported by CBS Boston.

“I’m very grateful to the Esplanade Association, which does an incredible job to make this park a vibrant greenspace,” Brady said. “As a big fan of Tom Brady, it’s an honor to announce that his name will prompt so many more people to explore, play, and make memories on the Esplanade,” Mergel said. “At DCR, we believe easy access to our greenspaces and natural resources is critical for creating healthy communities and should be available to all children and families regardless of financial ability,” Arrigo said.

Tom Brady’s impact to the community goes beyond football. The project has a personal connection for Brady, who once called the Charles River Esplanade his backyard while living in Boston’s Back Bay. Now, his contribution will help more children enjoy the park. The donation supports outdoor education, music activities and year-round recreation. It also adds to the work of his former teammate Rob Gronkowski, whose foundation funded improvements to a playground in the same area. Partners include Mass Audubon. Brady’s gift will help the association add equipment, instructors and more activities. It will also support Music and Movement, a program run with the Boston Music Project. Teaching artists help young children and their caregivers explore music through instruments and movement at the Esplanade’s playgrounds. “This park was so special to me. It was my backyard for years when I lived in the Back Bay. It’s where I first pushed my kids on a swing. He also expressed his hope that future generations could enjoy the same experiences, adding, “I’m proud to be supporting this important project. Let’s get this done so the next generation can enjoy what my family was always able to do. His words reflect the personal connection behind the contribution. The park holds family memories for Brady, and the expanded programs will give more children opportunities to learn and play outdoors. Brady’s gift will also support Charlesbank, a planned recreation campus near the former Lee Pool complex. The project will transform two acres into a year-round destination with indoor and outdoor spaces for recreational, educational and cultural activities. Jen Mergel, the Esplanade Association’s executive director, welcomed Brady’s contribution in a statement.
