Square Enix has now shared new details about the turn-based RPG ahead of its October launch, including its crystal-powered world and two new characters, Jake and Sakura. The game marks the first time a Final Fantasy title has used the HD-2D style, introduced with 2018’s Octopath Traveller. Resonance is based on the first season of the 2016 mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius.
Still, Square Enix says the new version expands and enhances that story rather than simply porting the original game. Resonance takes place in a world where crystals power several nations, while familiar elements from the SNES-era Final Fantasy games return, including chocobos, espers and airships. One of the game’s nations is the Zoldaad Empire, a military power built around the fire crystal. The empire has mass-produced airships and magitek weaponry and is reportedly planning to use them to invade neighbouring countries. , according to Square Enix. Final Fantasy Resonance is bringing the series its first HD-2D treatment, combining 2D pixel art with three-dimensional environments and dynamic lighting effects.
The game will also feature Mysidia, an advanced magical city associated with the Ice Crystal, which is said to exist only in legend. the company says he is committed to his fellow citizens and determined to end their suffering under the empire. In combat, Jake uses abilities based on chance, including Coin Toss and Gamble Shot While he is presented as someone who can be easily distracted. Square Enix says she speaks in a way that suggests she has an ancient soul, leading some to believe she is much older than she appears.
The name will be familiar to Final Fantasy fans, as Mysidia was also the name of a city inhabited by mages in Final Fantasy IV. Zoldaad and Mysidia are also connected to two of the game’s new main characters, Jake and Sakura. Square Enix describes Jake as the leader of the rebel army fighting the Zoldaad Empire. Meanwhile, Sakura appears to be a young girl, though her actual age is unknown. She also possesses significant magical abilities, while her origins and identity remain a mystery. The two characters join a story built around crystals, rival nations and the return of familiar Final Fantasy elements, while the HD-2D presentation gives the series a new visual treatment.
