GTA 6 could soon appear across Miami Beach as part of a proposed marketing deal with Rockstar Games. Still, several commissioners used the meeting to explain their opposition to the plan, including David Suarez, who showed footage from GTA 5 and the recent extended look at GTA 6. The disagreement centres on whether the financial benefits of Rockstar’s proposed advertising campaign outweigh concerns about associating Miami Beach with GTA 6’s fictional depiction of crime and violence.
The proposal has drawn criticism from some Miami Beach commissioners and law enforcement officials because of the game’s depiction of crime and violence against police officers, according to a report by Kotaku. Because the proposal already had four sponsors when discussion began, the report noted, the vote was largely expected. Rockstar therefore appears likely to get its Miami Beach marketing opportunity, although the terms and value of the agreement still have to be negotiated.
He said agreements and requests for proposals, or RFPs, are normally brought before the commission for final review before they are signed.
“A Miami Beach police car just rolled over, and here’s another one, getting away with an AR-15 shooting as they’re fleeing,” he said during the meeting while holding up a laptop showing the latest trailer. However, another commissioner, Monica Matteo-Salinas, strongly supported the motion and said she plays GTA herself. “This is a win for gamers and gaming nerds such as myself,” she said. “I sent a video of me with my nerdy headset on playing this, I didn’t really, but I do play this game, and I do have a nerdy headset, and so, you know, all my video game friends unite to play this game…I understand and respect the concerns, okay, but I am a law abiding citizen, I don’t waterboard, I don’t even own a gun, I never have, but I do like playing this game…” There is an important distinction in what Miami Beach commissioners approved. Mayor Steven Meiner said the process was unusual. “ Grand Theft Auto is a video game franchise built around criminal activity,” she said last month.
This will be possible after city commissioners recently voted to allow negotiations to advertise the highly anticipated game across the city. The agreement could involve signs, beach umbrellas and other parts of the local scenery, with the deal potentially worth millions of dollars. others questioned whether Miami Beach should associate its brand with a game in which players can shoot police officers While some officials argued that the money could instead be used to improve local parks and basketball courts. Suarez argued that the game conflicts with the values Miami Beach is already spending money to promote. “Again, I certainly don’t want to see our brand associated with this video game, I don’t think it’s worth any amount of money. The vote was not directly on whether the city would accept a completed marketing agreement from Rockstar Games. Instead, commissioners voted to empower the city manager to negotiate an agreement on the city’s behalf and try to secure as many millions of dollars as possible for the proposed advertising. That does not appear to be the case with what Rockstar is proposing. The meeting also raised questions about whether a lobbyist may have helped fast-track the proposal through the commission. The source material does not establish that a lobbyist was involved, but the possibility was raised during the discussion. The wider Miami-Dade County government is also continuing negotiations over a separate but related advertising deal. The proposed advertising arrangements have also attracted criticism from law enforcement officials. “Its fictional world includes murder, robbery, drug trafficking, carjacking, violence against law enforcement, and other conduct that the men and women of the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office work every single day to prevent. Despite those concerns, commissioners voted to move ahead with negotiations, leaving the city manager to work out the details of the proposed agreement with Rockstar Games.
