Xbox services faced a significant outage that lasted almost fifteen hours, preventing users from signing in and accessing their game libraries. The disruption was attributed to a failure in a critical licensing service external to Xbox. Microsoft’s Chief Technology Officer described the extended service failure as unacceptable. Engineers worked diligently to restore services by rerouting traffic and conducting investigations into the issue.

Vliet said this in response to Xbox Support’s official post that confirmed that the outage was resolved.

Let us know if anything still looks off: support.xbox.com” Earlier, the company confirmed the outage and wrote: “Xbox incident update: thanks for your patience through this long one — we’re making progress on recovery! What we did. Our on-call teams caught the first signals overnight through automated monitoring and declared a major incident. Once we isolated the failing infrastructure, we shifted traffic onto the healthy parts of the system while the team continued to work towards a root cause. Service came back unevenly across regions which is why some of you recovered hours before others. What’s next. We’re running a full post-incident review. I care less about the one-line root cause and more about the real questions: why a failure in one service was able to take down this much, why recovery took as long as it did, and what we change so a single point of failure can’t ruin your night again. That means hardening the dependencies underneath sign in and game launch, improving how we detect and contain this class of failure, and being faster and clearer with you when something breaks. You should once again be able to launch games, sign in, and complete purchases. Thanks for sticking with us through a long one. Most players should be able to launch titles and complete purchases again. Some may still see occasional failures as we finish up. Watch here or at support.xbox.com.”

The company wrote: “Good news — the earlier Xbox issue should now be mitigated.
