US President Donald Trump had dinner with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei on Sunday, September 27, bringing the two together for a private meeting after months of disagreements between the Trump administration and the AI company over safety and the military use of its technology. As stated in an AP report, the dinner took place at the White House and was the first reported one-on-one meeting between Trump and Amodei. The meeting came just days after a federal appeals court backed the Pentagon’s decision to classify Anthropic as a supply chain risk, allowing the Defense Department to continue removing the company’s Claude AI models from its systems.
Amodei has also called for the AI industry to slow down development so that safety measures can keep pace with increasingly powerful systems. As mentioned above, the dinner comes after a period of tension between Anthropic and the Trump administration over how AI should be developed and used by the US military. Anthropic has raised concerns about the use of AI for activities such as mass surveillance and autonomous weapons.
