More than 12,580 users reported issues with the platform, according to DownDetector, a service that tracks outages based on user reports. OpenAI’s Master Plan for India Approximately 93% of reported issues concerned ChatGPT specifically, while other OpenAI services appeared to remain functional. DownDetector data revealed roughly 3,000 people experienced issues during peak disruption hours.
During the outage, OpenAI acknowledged it was “experiencing issues,” including increased error rates on ChatGPT. The company later attributed the disruption to “a routing misconfiguration” and confirmed later that the problem had been resolved, with services returning to normal. The timing proves particularly challenging as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently declared a “code red” to improve platform reliability.
Users complained of being unexpectedly logged out of their accounts and losing access to previous chat histories. Many encountered an error message stating: “Unusual activity has been detected from your device. Try again later. The outage affected users across multiple platforms, with reports indicating the web version was particularly problematic while the Mac application showed intermittent functionality. The incident also follows closely after OpenAI disclosed a security breach at Mixpanel, one of its data analytics providers, which compromised user information including names, emails, and API-related details. Despite the widespread user reports on two consecutive days, OpenAI’s official status page initially displayed no problems during either outage, raising questions about the company’s monitoring systems.
