Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg ’s wife Priscilla Chan co-founded the Primary School in East Palo Alto, California in 2016 with the backing of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI). Over ten years, CZI poured more than $125 million into the project, making it one of the most ambitious philanthropic education ventures in Silicon Valley. A report by Wall Street Journal revealed that despite all these efforts the school shut its doors this past June after a decade of operation.
The school was designed to serve low-income families, the tuition fee private school aimed to support the “whole child” through wraparound services such as dental checkups, wellness coaching, and early‑intervention screenings. However, despite the strong support services and community engagement, academic performance often fell short of state norms, complicating efforts to replicate the model in public and charter schools.
School Board Votes to Shut Down Amid Funding Changes
In April 2025, the board of a school announced its unanimous decision to close, following the news that the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) would not extend funding beyond the 2025-26 academic year. Board president Jean-Claude Brizard stated that the closure was made in accordance with the priorities of its largest financial backer. A spokesperson for CZI clarified that the decision to shut down was made by the board and highlighted that the organization is shifting its focus towards scientific research.
CZI Supports Ravenswood School District Amid Enrollment Surge
Following the closure announcement affecting nearly 540 children enrolled at two campuses, the Ravenswood City Elementary School District is bracing for an influx of new students. Parents have expressed deep disappointment, with one referring to the school as a ‘godsend.’ In response to the situation, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) has committed $50 million to assist the district. This funding will cover the school’s lease and support local organizations, as well as provide education savings accounts for families to help ease the transition.
