The music publishers allege that Anthropic engaged in “illegally torrenting, scraping, and downloading” copyrighted songs, including works such as “Eye of the Tiger,” Marvin Gaye’s “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” and Taylor Swift’s “Paper Rings. Sony Music Publishing and Warner Chappell Music have sued Anthropic, accusing the AI company of using copyrighted songs without permission to train its Claude models. The lawsuit, filed in a Northern California federal court last week, also names Anthropic co-founders Dario Amodei and Benjamin Mann. The case adds another major copyright fight to the growing legal battle between AI companies and rights holders over how copyrighted material can be used to train AI systems.
“We disagree with the publishers’ claims and we intend to defend ourselves robustly in court,” an Anthropic spokesperson said, according to Benzinga. Anthropic has rejected the claims made by the music publishers.
