Google has announced an expansion of its Solar API, now covering over 300 million rooftops across India. This enhancement allows solar installers to assess a home’s solar potential without needing an on-site visit, which significantly cuts down both time and costs associated with evaluations.

The Solar API’s insights have already been integrated into platforms such as Solar Ladder and OpenSolar. These integrations help streamline the proposal creation process and automate manual roof surveys, making solar installations more efficient and accessible.

This development reflects a growing trend in the solar industry towards leveraging technology to optimize assessment and installation processes.

Google has signed a long‑term agreement with ReNew Power for a 150‑megawatt solar project in Rajasthan. This marks Google’s second Scope 3‑focused solar project in India, bringing total added capacity to 300 MW. The company will receive environmental attributes from the clean electricity generated, helping address electricity‑related emissions across its value chain.

The initiative is expected to generate up to 3 million tonnes of CO₂e in near‑term warming impact (GWP20) and conserve billions of gallons of water. Google is partnering with Mitti Labs to help tens of thousands of smallholder rice farmers adopt Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD), a climate‑smart farming method that reduces methane emissions and conserves water. The Google Center for Climate Technology has selected three inaugural projects focused on green workforce training and low‑carbon construction materials. Google is adding two new focus areas—water stewardship and waste & circularity—and is inviting proposals via the Manthan Platform. Selected applicants will receive support to develop scalable, data‑driven environmental solutions. Google has welcomed the first cohort of the DeepMind Accelerator: AI for the Planet, featuring four Indian startups: Terrastack, Varaha Climate, Farmers for Forests, and Climitra Carbon. These companies use AI, Geo‑AI, drones and satellite models to empower farmers, scale agroforestry, restore biodiversity, and convert biomass into biochar. These five initiatives reflect Google’s push to combine AI, research partnerships and local innovation to advance sustainable development and climate resilience across India.
