Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s parliamentary email account was among those targeted in a cyberattack on the computer systems of Italy’s lower house of parliament, with several lawmakers and other institutions also affected, news agency Reuters reported Tuesday.

Parliamentary technicians contained the incident, while officials said they had activated protective measures, according to Italian news agency ANSA. “Sources at Palazzo Chigi, the prime minister’s office, told news agency ANSA that the affected account was not the one Meloni uses for government communications. Officials at the Chamber of Deputies said the incident did not constitute a security emergency, adding that such attacks occur frequently. They also said pressure on IT systems appeared to have intensified in recent days, affecting other national, European and international institutions.

The attack targeted the IT systems of the Chamber of Deputies in recent days, although it was not immediately clear whether Meloni’s account had been accessed.
