Dramatic videos from Nepal show the scale of destruction caused by a flash flood along the Budhi Gandaki River in Gorkha district, with entire sections of settlements swept away, bridges destroyed and homes reduced to debris. Visuals from the affected region show floodwaters tearing through Salleri Bazaar, causing severe damage in Jagat Bazaar and sweeping away the Soti Khola Bridge.

At least 10 people have been reported missing since Sunday morning after the sudden surge in the Budhi Gandaki River basin, according to officials cited by news agency ANI. Preliminary reports suggest that around 35 houses were swept away in Painyu and Bagar in Ward 3 of Chumnubri Rural Municipality. A Bailey bridge linking wards 1 and 3 of Dharche Rural Municipality was also destroyed. The disaster comes as Nepal continues to grapple with the aftermath of the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli floods on August 26, which resulted in the deaths of 1,455 people and left 5,285 missing.

The Nepal Army subsequently said six people had been evacuated to safer locations, ANI reported.

Bridges at Arughat, Tripurasundari and Soti-Manbu were among those swept away, assistant chief district officer Netra Prasad Sharma told ANI. Prime Minister Balendra Shah said a Nepali Army contingent had been deployed by air and land for search and rescue operations. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority has also urged residents in vulnerable riverside settlements to relocate and remain alert, according to AP.

However, the full extent of the damage remains unclear. The flooding has devastated settlements in the northern part of Gorkha district, including Salleri, Jagat, Dovan and Ghattekhola. The disaster has also destroyed or damaged six bridges, including motorable bridges and suspension bridges, disrupting connections between several settlements. The flood had damaged a hydropower project in the district. Authorities have yet to establish the cause of the sudden surge, while residents have raised the possibility that a blocked tributary or a landslide may have triggered the flooding. Nepal has mobilised security personnel and helicopters to evacuate residents and provide relief in the affected region. A rapid response team from Kathmandu was also airlifted to the area. Home minister Sudan Gurung urged people living along the Budhi Gandaki River to move to safer areas, warning that the river’s flow continued to fluctuate. Police, the Armed Police Force and local authorities have been mobilised for rescue and evacuation efforts. The cause of the flash flood remains under investigation. The tragedy also caused significant damage to homes and infrastructure, leaving communities in mountainous areas vulnerable to further disruption. You use AI every day. Now get your AI Quotient.
