Police have not publicly established why the girl was attacked.
A 7-year-old girl was fatally stabbed on a Chicago sidewalk Saturday morning after a woman allegedly approached her and stabbed her multiple times in the back, according to police and local reports. The attack took place shortly before noon in the 8600 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue on the city’s South Side. Her identity and age had not been released in the latest reports.
Police said the girl was walking outside when the woman approached her with a sharp object and attacked her. The woman accused of stabbing her was detained by bystanders who witnessed the attack, police said. The child was rushed to Comer Children’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The suspect suffered injuries while being held by the bystanders and was taken to a hospital for treatment before being taken into police custody. The footage and witness accounts could help investigators reconstruct what happened before and after the stabbing. Police have not disclosed whether the surveillance video captured the stabbing itself.
Motive remains unclear
Reports have also differed over whether the woman knew the child, with a later NBC Chicago report saying police indicated that the two did not know each other, while other reports said their relationship remained unclear. Police have not publicly established why the girl was attacked. Chicago Police Department Area Two detectives are investigating the case.
