The clean-up effort grew out of cooperation between Mammoth Cave National Park and the National Speleological Society (NSS). The Mammoth Cave Restoration Camp organises three weekend camps and one weeklong camp each year, giving volunteers a chance to help remove dirt and lint while keeping the cave accessible to visitors. Initially, the volunteers used simple brooms and dustpans and did their work once a year during the weeklong Restoration Camp. As their methods and equipment improved, the programme expanded, allowing participants to sign up for daily lint-cleaning tasks. Using brooms or HEPA vacuums, volunteers now search out the material visitors leave behind. That figure turns an apparently trivial form of litter into a striking measure of the human footprint inside one of the world’s most remarkable underground environments.
