Kochi : Fort Kochi Police have registered an FIR against a vlogger for allegedly causing communal disharmony by posting a reel, purportedly after visiting the Kashi Art Café in Fort Kochi.
The FIR was registered under sections 353 (2) and 192 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for circulating false information with intent to create or promote feelings of enmity, hatred or ill will between different religious groups and giving provocation to cause riot. As per the FIR, the vlogger said in the video that the café, in the name of a holy city for Hindus, was selling beef. The police said that he also made other unsubstantiated claims and hateful remarks against the Muslim community, including that Fort Kochi is dominated by Muslim population. The FIR said that the accused acted with the knowledge that his actions could disrupt peace and harmony.
The case was registered against Amrith Singh Darren. He also criticised an art installation placed at the café which had a juxtaposition of sculptural works of Mahatma Gandhi and Muhammad Ali Jinnah. The man also targeted the state govt and challenged the home minister of the state. He also claimed that he heard from the locals that the state govt here was receiving funds from Arab nations to promote Islam. The vlogger also made similar unsubstantiated claims about a mosque in Varkala in the video. It added that he created communal disharmony through the video. Reacting to the video, opposition leader Pinarayi Vijayan posted on X that Fort Kochi and Varkala are places where cultures meet, histories intertwine and diversity thrives. “Now, a vlogger peddling hate for profit seeks to paint these vibrant destinations in communal colours. Having failed to divide Keralam, the Sangh Parivar is outsourcing its hate campaign to online provocateurs. But Keralam’s secular spirit will not yield to their politics of hatred. The state govt must take strict legal action against those spreading communal enmity,” he posted. Download the TOI App.
