The registration department is working to make older marriage registration records available digitally soon
The integration covers 1,08,870 certificates, including 87,318 related to marriages solemnised under the Special Marriage Act, 1954, and 21,552 related to marriages solemnised earlier but registered subsequently. The department began processing marriage registrations online on May 27, 2023.
Joint inspector general of registration Rajendra Muthe said the facility would make it easier for citizens to produce their marriage certificates whenever required. “They can access the document digitally through DigiLocker whenever they need it,” Muthe said. Revenue minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule had instructed the registration and stamps department to initiate the process of making marriage certificates available on the platform, registration officials said. The latest initiative extends access to these records through DigiLocker, enabling citizens to retrieve their certificates on cellphones instead of depending solely on physical copies, said officials. Acceptance of the digital certificate will depend on the requirements of the authority concerned, registration department officials said. A facility such as DigiLocker makes it easier to share documents for official purposes,” said Vinita Handa, who got married last year. Residents said the data should be expanded. “The registration department should speed up the work of digitisation and cover the earlier years too,” said Mohan Raina.
The department is working to make older marriage registration records available digitally soon. The facility would help citizens while submitting marriage proof for administrative and official procedures, including applications requiring evidence of marital status. “Recently, under the SIR drive, I had to submit my document of marriage registration to the booth-level officer. I had to scan it, get it attested and carry it to the BLO.
The department integrated its marriage registration software with DigiLocker on Friday, enabling citizens to access their digitally signed certificates through their accounts.
