COIMBATORE: The Tamil Nadu Association of Cottage and Micro Enterprises has urged electricity minister C T R Nirmal Kumar to take up immediate power infrastructure upgrades in Coimbatore district, citing frequent supply disruptions and voltage fluctuations impacting more than 50,000 micro and small industrial units located alongside residential clusters.
The association sought dedicated additional 11 kV/22 kV feeders from all 110 kV substations catering to micro and small industrial clusters. It also asked that new feeder lengths be kept within 5 km to reduce losses and improve stability, stating that existing feeder stretches extend up to about 12 km in several areas. To address low voltage and fluctuations across Coimbatore city and surrounding town panchayat and panchayat areas, it requested installation of around 20 new high-capacity transformers per TNPDCL section office. The association reiterated its appeal to roll back the fixed charges for LTCT connections up to 112 kW, claiming the monthly per-kW fixed charge has been raised from Rs 35 to Rs 162 since Sept 2023, and said a representation submitted to the chief minister on July 29 was yet to be implemented.

The association demanded round-the-clock “FOC” (fault/fuse-off call) night breakdown response offices across all circles in Coimbatore, similar to the facility available in parts of the city. Among other demands, the body called for upgrading existing HT lines by replacing conductors to handle maximum current safely and enhancing the capacity of existing distribution transformers to enable higher and steadier power delivery. The association flagged non-functional ring main units and automatic switches, alleging that they had remained without maintenance for years, resulting in material waste and delays in fault rectification. It sought immediate repairs and restoration of these systems. Download the TOI App.
