New Delhi: Jamia Millia Islamia witnessed widespread vandalism late Tuesday night, with masked unidentified people allegedly damaging university gates and boundary walls, prompting the administration to express serious concerns over campus security.
Security remained tight Wednesday, with the campus wearing a deserted look amid prohibitory orders under BNSS Section 163. The university has extended the period for online classes till Nov 24, stating the situation is not conducive for academic environment. Ebin Basil, who began on Oct 12, has lost 7.1 kg, while Rehan Khan, on his 14th day, has lost 4 kg. The deadlock persists despite the university’s Oct 26 order agreeing to hold elections 15 days after approval of the union constitution, revoke suspensions and show-cause notices, and institute an inquiry into security staff conduct. Students want the constitution approved by Dec 20, followed by elections within 15 days. The university also cited the need to prepare a voter list of about 24,000 students.

In a statement Wednesday, the university said its proctorial team and teachers rushed to the campus after receiving reports of attacks. The vandalism began shortly after its seventh attempt at dialogue with protesters Tuesday evening, according to the administration. The university said footage and social media posts indicated the use of iron rods, hammers and other tools. A university spokesperson told TOI the administration had no objection in principle to a students’ union but needed time to examine documents, including previous incidents of violence, court orders and Lyngdoh Committee recommendations.
They found that some individuals had brought down Gate No. 4C, pelted stones and damaged the CCTV control room, cameras and their connections. The university also alleged that masked individuals reached the boys’ hostels to mobilise support. It alleged women faculty members, wardens and provosts were threatened when they tried to reason with female protesters. Police also detained some students outside the campus. Exams scheduled for Dec will also be held online. Meanwhile, the hunger strike over restoration of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union entered its 17th day. Five students are fasting. Three others joined Monday. Doctors have appealed to the vice-chancellor and expressed concern over Ebin and Rehan’s deteriorating health. Meanwhile, amid the ongoing agitation, the university’s Foundation Day celebrations scheduled for Thursday have been cancelled for the first time. Several hostel residents were seen leaving Wednesday, amid allegations that students had been asked to vacate hostels following the shift to online classes. Download the TOI App.
