FSU students react to Mike Norvell’s firing as nearly $50 million buyout triggers unexpected debate over Florida State’s decision
Norvell joined Florida State in December 2019 after spending four seasons as the head coach at Memphis. His first few years showed signs of progress, with the Seminoles improving from a 5-7 record in 2021 to 10-3 in 2022. The biggest success of his time in Tallahassee came in 2023, when Florida State won the ACC Championship and finished the regular season unbeaten at 13-0. Before the 2024 season, Norvell signed an eight-year contract extension worth more than $84 million, keeping him at Florida State through 2031. The agreement included a clause requiring the university to pay 85% of his remaining salary if it fired him.
However, the team was left out of the College Football Playoff and later lost the Orange Bowl to Georgia. The financial side of the decision is also important.
Florida State students have shared mixed reactions after the university fired head coach Mike Norvell despite facing a buyout of nearly $50 million. She believes the coaching change could improve the team’s mood and give the university more time to find its next head coach before the 2027 season.
Students and alumni had different opinions about Norvell’s departure when she spoke to them in Tallahassee, according to WCTV reporter Julia Miller. One junior at Florida State said he was happy with the decision and felt the university might as well make the change now if it had already decided to pay Norvell his buyout. others have questioned why the university waited until the middle of the season While some believe the decision was necessary to help the Seminoles recover. Students also have different views on whether making the coaching change now will help the team prepare for next year. Some supported the university’s decision, believing that keeping him would only delay the team’s progress. FSU alumna Grace Froehle also supported the move. “I think it’s better overall. I think it’s honestly good for the team.
I think the morale of the team will be better, and the earlier we can get him fired, the sooner we can start recruiting for next year.”
