Ahmedabad: AMC’s town planning committee on Wednesday approved the draft Ahmedabad Sustainable Demolition Policy 2026, proposing tighter safety, pollution-control and debris-disposal rules for demolition work across the city. Demolition of structures with more than 500 square metres of built-up area require permission at least seven days in advance. For buildings taller than 15 metres or structures with more than 10,000 square metres of built-up area, applicants must submit a structural assessment, a construction and demolition waste management plan and an environmental and safety plan. Debris must be covered, cleared within 48 hours, and transported in covered vehicles to authorised processing facilities. The draft also requires the use of at least 15% of construction and demolition waste or recycled products in high-category construction or reconstruction work, supporting resource recovery alongside urban redevelopment.

AMC can also initiate action under Gujarat Provincial Municipal Corporations Act for breaches, the official statement said. The draft will go to the standing committee for approval. Under the proposal, owners and contractors could face fines, stop-work orders and even police complaints for unauthorised demolitions or violations. Property owners and other responsible parties would also be liable for damage to neighbouring properties or for causing injuries. AMC also specifies written notification to zonal estate and town development department at least seven days before demolition, along with photographs and building details. Demolition must be supervised by designated engineers, with stricter oversight for larger sites. The policy classifies demolition sites into five categories based on height and built-up area. It mandates barricades, safety nets where required, protective gear for workers and measures to safeguard utilities, neighbouring properties and road users. Demolition would be restricted to daytime hours. Dust-control measures include barriers, misting systems, and monitoring. Depending on the category, transport logs and receipts must be maintained.
