Nashik : The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has submitted a revised proposal to the district administration seeking 8,280 mcft of water for the city’s drinking water needs and the Simhastha Kumbh Mela. This comes days after the district-level water reservation committee approved 6,973 mcft against NMC’s earlier demand of 8,000 mcft for the 2026-27 water reservation cycle. Of the revised demand, 7,645 mcft is sought for regular drinking water supply, while 635 mcft is earmarked for Kumbh Mela requirements.
The civic body has also sought exemption from the proposed 10% cut in water allocation, citing the additional demand expected during the 2027 Kumbh Mela. The revised proposal was submitted on Thursday after district guardian minister Girish Mahajan, who chaired the district-level water reservation committee meeting on Oct 29, asked NMC to reassess its requirement and submit a fresh proposal. The NMC has also sought exemption from the proposed 10% cut in water allocation, citing the additional requirement expected during the 2027 Simhastha Kumbh Mela. Of the 8,280 mcft sought, 7,645 mcft is for the city’s regular drinking water requirement, while the remaining 635 mcft has been sought specifically for Kumbh-related needs. Reservoir-wise, the NMC has sought 5,780 mcft from the Gangapur dam complex, 230 mcft from Darna dam through Chehedi weir and 2,270 mcft from Mukane dam for regular drinking water supply. During the Oct 29 meeting, the district-level committee approved 6,973 mcft for the NMC and did not accept the civic body’s entire demand in view of the prevailing drought situation.
The civic body has projected that the city’s water consumption could rise by around 10% due to possible migration from drought-affected rural areas. Mahajan had said the allocation was being made in accordance with Maharashtra Water Resources Regulatory Authority guidelines and asked the NMC to take measures to curb water losses and conserve available stocks. The minister had also suggested a one-day-a-week cut in the city’s drinking water supply to conserve water and cautioned that the civic body may have to take difficult decisions during peak summer.
