Pune: A 65-year-old Bopkhel resident who retired from Army lost Rs 94.34 lakh to cybercrooks who lured him into investing in stocks and IPOs through a fake trading app, promising returns of up to 1,000%.
A police officer said the complainant was added to an investor group on a messaging app, where members shared stock tips and screenshots of purported profits. “She sent him a link to an app, claiming it was an official trading platform,” the officer said. A woman then contacted him, claiming to represent a prominent Sebi-registered securities firm, and shared a purported registration certificate. She claimed the company offered shares and IPO below market prices. Convinced by the profits displayed by other group members, the man agreed to invest.
The app later showed profits of Rs 2 crore.
“He made 30 transactions to different bank accounts, transferring a total of Rs 94,34,694,” the officer said. However, when he attempted to withdraw the amount, he was allegedly asked to make repeated payments towards share purchases, IPO allotments, brokerage charges and capital gains-related dues. Police have traced the transferred money to bank accounts across several states, including Odisha, Karnataka, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Assam and West Bengal.
